ART: Roman Sculpture

We are studying about the Ancient Roman Empire. The gladiators, amphitheaters, aqueducts, Roman baths, and lots more. The students got to chose an item to recreate in sculpture form. They got to chose a helmet, shield, sword, crown or a model of Roman architecture: the Colosseum, Roman baths, or an aqueduct. The aqueducts have to actually hold water!
After we read in our books, we got on Google Earth and took a virtual 'field trip' to Rome. Did you know you can actually go inside the Colosseum?!

Materials we are using:
  • cardboard-thin and corrugated
  • tape-duct, masking, packing
  • hot glue
  • paper mache- newspaper+flour/salt/water
  • paint
  • craft gems
  • wire
  • x-acto knives and box blades (they learned how to use them PROPERLY!)
  • wood/stain
  • other assorted items: hubcaps, leather straps, brads, etc...
  • some are welding metal!

The artistic process.. Students have to do a detailed sketch, planning out the specific
materials they will use, colors, etc.

they had to make the basic forms
