GRAPHiC DESiGN: Stencils

Image
We learned about the stencil process by creating a strong contrasting image in photoshop. Once the image was created, sometimes we had to darken or lighten areas to keep important features. We tried to choose recognizable images to begin with. Then we cut away the positive space and were left with the negative space. We had to be careful to leave small pieces to attach center areas, such as the insides of a letter or else it would be one solid shape instead of intricate areas within. We definitely had some trial and error! We learned it was OK to tape back pieces together and re-trim if we made a mistake, we learned to shield off areas we didn't want overspray, and we learned to spray paint in the grass NOT on the SIDEWALK! :) The process works better with a firmer paper like card stock or thin cardboard as paper curls and lifts. Once the stencils were made, we tried many variations. One student made a whole series, each piece with 2 separate stencils- a portrait and a name. Mate

For this theme in particular, I showed them some of the characteristics of pop art and comic drawing to look for when choosing their reference image.  They print out their image and draw from the edge of the photo a 1" grid across the whole thing. On some, the kids had to decide to crop or add on edges to get an even measurement. They also had to add in the characters name somewhere in a comic style. They outl
