ART: Roman Sculpture

We are studying about the Ancient Roman Empire. The gladiators, amphitheaters, aqueducts, Roman baths, and lots more. The students got to chose an item to recreate in sculpture form. They got to chose a helmet, shield, sword, crown or a model of Roman architecture: the Colosseum, Roman baths, or an aqueduct. The aqueducts have to actually hold water! After we read in our books, we got on Google Earth and took a virtual 'field trip' to Rome. Did you know you can actually go inside the Colosseum?! Materials we are using: cardboard-thin and corrugated tape-duct, masking, packing hot glue paper mache- newspaper+flour/salt/water paint craft gems wire x-acto knives and box blades (they learned how to use them PROPERLY!) wood/stain    other assorted items: hubcaps, leather straps, brads, etc...   some are welding metal!                The artistic process.. Humanities: African Masks

After studying about African cultures: the masks, the music, the traditions: our project was to make a mask! We took inspiration from our books and online research of all the different mask types. Leaf masks, helmet masks that cover the whole head, mourning masks-shaped like a tear, and we used many of the traditional patterns and colors.      African Mask Video Materials we used: cardboard glue feathers paint paper grass leaves yarn We had a great time and made a big mess!  Some brought real grass and feathers from their own animals-the real deal!  

ART: Greek Architecture

We are starting spring off with some great projects! High school art has created their own designs of Greek temples. We studied about Greek architecture and the Greek gods, goddesses, and monsters. They then had to design a building inspired by the god or goddess of their choice. They had to include the main parts of the building, but could be creative in most of the other parts. They had to use symbols and colors inspired by their god. They also had to write a short paragraph telling about their god/goddess. A few of the student's designs
